The 20th annual Pink Walk for Cancer, hosted by the Boland Islamic Council and Women’s League (BICWL), drew a record crowd to Harmony Park on Sunday (9 February). Participants, clad in pink, walked and ran in solidarity, raising funds for the Tygerberg Hospital Oncology Department. The event, held in support of those who have battled cancer, yielded well over 3 000 entries and more than 2 000 participants, with a vibrant sea of pink flooding Faure Marine and Lower Gordon’s Bay Road. Safiyyah and Amatullah Vermeulen, along with Gafsah Julius and Khadijah Vermeulen, welcomed participants at the finish line, handing out medals and treats.

Serving as marshalls were Asa Sebonka (Gustrouw Neighbourhood Watch chairperson), Lilian Albertyn (Strand Community Policing Forum deputy chairperson), Jacqui Hansen (Loswil Park Neighbourhood Watch secretary) and Rashied Hendricks.

Thirteen-year-old Tashwill Houston crossed the finish line first, with Franco Jantjies (20) hot on his heels. Both participants dedicated their walk to the memory of a loved one lost to cancer.

Eljeron Martins took third place.

Eleven-year-olds Mustafa Gordon and Alex Christians finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Mother-daughter-duo Ilse and Taryn Saayman successfully completed the walk.

Julaiga Dean and her granddaughters, Ieshaam and Kieshaam enjoyed the morning walk for a worthy cause.

Landon and Timothy Hendricks, and Tristan Vollmer were beaming with satisfaction after completing the walk.

Niklaas Thysen proudly showed off his medal at the finish line.

Waleed Gabier joined in the Pink Walk for Cancer fun with support from his granddaughter, Amani.

Yamkela Qwenya, Siziphiwe Delihlazo, Nandipha Mjonono, and Lindokuhle Ngamxeli swapped their police uniforms for running gear. The Cape Pioneers representatives were elated to cross the finish line together.

Laeticia Steer, Venessa de Wet, Zelda de Vos and Bernice Hendricks showed great determination in completing the walk for cancer in memory of their friends, Rene Hoff and Venessa Damonse.

Loved ones and friends of the late Logan Abrahams walked in her memory. The 23-year-old from Somerset West lost her battle with tongue cancer in March last year.

Friends and family honored the memory of Yulretia Isaacs, a young mother and spouse, who passed away after a courageous fight against cancer. Pictured are Thelma Appollis, Bernie Cupido, Tania Eksteen, Monica Youd, Faiza Daniels, Gladys Prins, Justin Youd, and Zoe Appollis.
