Voting for the general elections is well underway in the Helderberg, with citizens in every corner of the basin coming out to make their mark.
A slow but steady start was noted at various voting stations, where queues were increasing at length by mid-morning. The only frustration for some voters was waiting times of over an hour, but others were only too eager and happy to cast their vote no matter how long the process would take.
There were no reports of any disturbances, major interruptions or incidents requiring intervention by authorities.
Voting stations will be open until 21:00 tonight (Wednesday 29 May).
Eager voters Andries Smith, Marie and Steven Tobias, and Beverley and Sarah Faviers casted their vote for necessary change and a better future at Macassar Secondary School. The early birds surely caught the worm by getting their hands on a copy of the latest edition of their favourite community newspaper which served up much reading delight on election day.
Voters braced long lines at Strand High School, where one of the largest turnouts was seen this morning.
Marize, Tim and Rudi Nel made casting their vote a family affair at Gordon High School, where refreshments and indulgent treats were on offer to voters who championed the long queues.
Morne Neels was disappointed to be declined the opportunity to vote as he is registered in the Northern Cape and only recently relocated to Macassar. Although he failed to register in time to participate locally, he turned up at the Macassar voting station nevertheless in hopes of being allowed to make his mark.
Voters rocked up at Macassar Secondary School amid a foggy start to the morning and visible police and law enforcement presence.

Melissa van Niekerk knew exactly which party she was going to vote for, citing that she did her research for her preferred party and wanted her voice to be heard.
Voting stations appeared well organised, despite some hiccups with the electronic system at some venues.
