A group of youngsters in Sir Lowry’s Pass Village who aimlessly swing golf clubs in the streets, knocking cans and smashing stones, are now putting their skills to good use after being enrolled for golf lessons with a professional coach.

“I was contacted by former colleagues who told me a woman had reached out to them to assist these kids,” explained coach Josh Bezuidenhout, who also privately coaches adults and juniors all over the Helderberg.

“I was asked to offer them lessons. I saw an opportunity to share my passion for golf and golf development, and that’s how this began.”

Bezuidenhout previously worked at SA Golf Development to assist training provincial champs. About a dozen kids now gather weekly at the sports grounds in Sir Lowry’s Pass, where they learn more than just a game, but also the rules of the greens, etiquette and discipline.

The Garden Village resident related that he was born on hole 3 at the Somerset West golf course back in 1975, when both his parents were caddies.

“I basically grew up on a golf course and played it all my life. I was the Somerset West club champion twice, in 1998 and 2001.”

But his passion for the game extends well beyond just playing; he loves teaching, coaching and talking about it.

“My main focus is to inspire these children to play at the Western Province Junior Golf Foundation Tournaments one day. But we start at the beginning, expose them to the sport and teach them the basics. The first few lessons concentrated largely on values and rules, gripping the club and posture. I estimate it will take about six months to nurture a competitive golfer.”

The lessons, which started last November, are free of charge for the local Sir Lowry’s Pass community every Friday afternoon. Next month Bezuidenhout hopes to start girls’ junior golf as well.

“It’s really a pleasure having them here, so hopefully this is the start of something very special for this community.”

The group received a visit from SAS Security last Friday (21 January) and were given nine golf clubs, 100 golf balls and some clothing. Owner Ryan Morris said they want the children to pursue healthy habits and sport, and when coming across this initiative they gladly showed their support and will continue to do so.
