Danielle Kleyn, a Grade 11 learner at Parel Vallei High School, retained her title as the best girl at the 27th Pan-African Maths Olympiad (PAMO) earlier this month. The event, hosted by the African Mathematics Union (AMU), invites learners from across the continent to compete, and encourages mathematical talent and teaching methods in the subject across the continent. Danielle was part of the SA team to compete in the PAMO and PAMO-G, the latter for girls, and the team achieved first position in both competitions. At these olympiads she was crowned the African Queen of Mathematics. She was reselected for the team this year, which outsmarted 12 teams to come in second overall. Danielle enjoyed being part of team SA, especially interacting with her teammates to solve mathematical problems and exchange new mathematical methods and formats. Other than her participation in PAMO, she is also looking forward to the olympiads offered by UCT, Die Burger and SAMO. She enjoys design and languages as school subjects, but dreams of studying towards a degree that will combine her favourite subjects of mathematics, science and computer sciences.
