Tyra Ross and Anya Rosenstrauch of Parel Vallei High School in Somerset West secured second place in the Senior Afrikaans Eerste Addisionele Taal category at the inaugural Nou Praat Jy! national speech competition. The contest, hosted at Curro Durbanville High School last Wednesday (25 June), challenged learners to present Afrikaans speeches in pairs under the theme “Afrikaans โ€“ ‘n taal van kleure en klank,” commemorating 100 years of Afrikaans as an official language. The unique duet format emphasised teamwork and natural dialogue, distinguishing it from traditional debate competitions. Against strong competition from across various provinces, Tyra and Anya’s presentation impressed judges with its spontaneity, clarity and meaningful connection to the centenary theme.
