It was a day of highs and lows for Somerset West Cricket Club (SWCC) on Saturday 7 February, as a valiant effort with the ball wasn’t quite enough to overcome a difficult start with the bat in their First Division B match against Kuils River CC at Radloff Park.

After being put in to bat SWCC found themselves under immediate pressure from a disciplined Kuils River attack. While runs were hard to come by Larry Morkel (19 runs off 41 balls) and Jeanro Minnaar (17 runs off 54 balls) provided crucial periods of stability at the crease.
Despite the pair’s patience in the middle, the Kuils River bowlers proved lethal to bundle the home side out for 60 runs in 30.4 overs.

The low total did not deter the SWCC bowling unit, who came out with aggressive intent to defend their tally at the start of the visitors’ innings. Paul Steyn was the standout performer, ripping through the Kuils River batting line-up to finish with impressive figures of 3/20. Josua Smit (2/28) played a supportive role, while Gous Koen picked up a scalp for 10 runs.
At one point SWCC had the visitors against the ropes, but the Kuils River batsmen eventually sealed the four-wicket victory in the 19th over.

Meanwhile, it was a bruising weekend on the pitch for the Hottentots Holland CC (HHCC) in First Division A, as they suffered back-to-back defeats against formidable opposition in their outings.
The weekend got off to a difficult start in Ravensmead on Saturday, when HHCC faced Tygerberg CC, who proved to be in clinical form, setting a pace that the visiting side struggled to match. By the final delivery, HHCC fell to a significant 145-run defeat, leaving the team with plenty of questions to answer.

Looking to bounce back, HHCC took on Milnerton CC on Sunday. While the contest was tighter than the previous day’s outing, the winning result remained elusive. Milnerton managed to chase down the required total with clinical efficiency, handing HHCC their second loss of the weekend by six wickets.
In First Division C, Helderberg CC (HCC) secured a clinical six-wicket victory over Sherwood-Manenberg CC after dismantling the hosts for just 59 runs. The bowling trio of Bailey Kapfumo (3/8), Dexter Hindley (3/16) and Chad Bailey (3/24) proved unstoppable.
The HCC batters chased down the target in a mere 12.1 overs, fuelled by quick-fire cameos by Waqaar Josephs (14) and Blaze Roos (13*).

It was a weekend to forget for Strand CC (SCC) in First Division D, as they suffered two heavy defeats.
After being put in to bat in gloomy conditions on Saturday, SCC was dismissed for 92 runs by South Peninsula CC, with Dyron Malapa (23) top-scoring. South Peninsula comfortably crossed the line in the 31st over.
On Sunday, fielding woes cost Strand dearly against Bellville South CC, with six dropped catches allowing the opposition to reach 276 runs, despite Lesley Taylor claiming 3/44. SCC’s chase never really ignited, ending in a 126-run collapse.
