A fatal multi-vehicle collision causing a truck to catch alight, which claimed one life, caused major traffic disruptions on the N2 highway last Tuesday afternoon (2 December).

Grabouw police confirmed a case of culpable homicide was registered following the incident, which occurred near the Steenbras Dam entrance on the Grabouw side of the N2.

According to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, emergency teams received a call at 16:25 regarding smoke emanating from the vicinity of the dam.

A fire crew from Sir Lowry’s Pass Fire Station was immediately dispatched to the scene.

On arrival, firefighters discovered a heavy-duty truck in flames. It had apparently been involved in a collision with two other vehicles.

“Three people sustained injuries, one of them fatally,” confirmed Carelse. “The fire crew worked to contain the blaze, which was successfully extinguished at 17:22.”

Provincial police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said: “The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.”

The severity of the scene resulted in both lanes being closed to traffic, inbound at Houw Hoek and outbound at Sir Lowry’s Pass, forcing motorists to use alternate routes while the scene was cleared.
