Saturday 19 April (Event #363) was a special day at Root44 as parkrunners celebrated the birthday of Dame Kelly Holmes, the Tonbridge (UK) native and iconic Olympian. The first Briton in 80 years to achieve two gold medals at the Olympics, she graced the parkrun as an enthusiastic participant. Unsurprisingly, she finished as the first woman in 22 minutes and 44 seconds, also marking her debut in a new age category. Pictured is Holmes in full flight on the Bonte River Farm road. Over 600 runners and 25 volunteers enjoyed a lovely morning running, jogging and walking on Audacia Wine Farm with sunlight breaking through mist curling round the valleys and over the hills. A glorious morning indeed. And to top it all, farmer Trevor Strydom opened his wine shop after the parkrun and offered “odd bins” of his sulphite-free wines, ciders and rooibos beer. What a pleasure. The parkrun starts at 08:00 sharp, with a safety briefing at 07:45.
