In a gripping sequence of events, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Gordon’s Bay crew demonstrated exceptional bravery and precision in a series of maritime rescues, underscoring the importance of the NSRI SafeTrx smartphone application.
On Sunday evening (16 June), the NSRI Gordon’s Bay duty crew jumped into action after an emergency alert from a lone boater experiencing motor failure off the coast near Steenbras River Mouth. The crew, piloting the steadfast Spirit of Surfski, swiftly located the distressed ski-boat, securing the safety of the stranded individual without a hitch.
The operation concluded with the vessel being towed to Gordon’s Bay Old Harbour and safely recovered.
Earlier this month, on Saturday 1 June, a local man, kayaking off the Strand Pavilion, found himself in peril after capsizing. Thanks to the app, the NSRI was alerted immediately, enabling a rapid rescue that prevented potential tragedy.
These successes have not only proven the effectiveness of the NSRI SafeTrx app, but also its potential to significantly reduce the need for extensive search operations, providing exact locations of individuals in distress.
The NSRI advocates for widespread adoption of this lifesaving technology, available at no cost at NSRI SafeTrx, urging all maritime enthusiasts to prioritise their safety by downloading and using the application (https://www.nsri.org.za/water-safety/safetrx/).
