Strand Surf Lifesaving Club (SSLC) proudly hosted the Western Province Nipper Championships at Strand Beach on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 March, welcoming young lifesavers and their families from across the region for an action-packed weekend of surf and beach competition.
Clubs travelled from as far afield as Mossel Bay and Plettenberg Bay, while local participation included teams from Big Bay, Clifton, Llandudno and Fish Hoek.
Saturday presented extremely challenging conditions, with large, powerful surf, strong winds and demanding currents testing the resilience and skill of the young competitors. Despite the tough environment, the nippers showed remarkable determination and sportsmanship throughout the day’s events.

In contrast, Sunday delivered spectacular conditions. Calm winds and glassy seas created a perfect stage for the remaining competitions, bringing exciting racing and strong performances across the board.
SSLC’s own nippers rose to the occasion, delivering exceptional results with numerous podium finishes. Many athletes secured top-eight positions, contributing valuable points for the club.
The competition featured classic lifesaving disciplines including surf-swims, board races, beach runs and flags, as well as exciting team events such as beach relays and the popular Taplin relay.
Adding to the atmosphere, Dawid Mocke from Fish Hoek provided live commentary over the two days, keeping fans informed and entertained. A special highlight was a surprise visit from Springbok rugby captain Siya Kolisi, who came to support the nippers from Milnerton Surf.
The weekend was a celebration of youth lifesaving sport, camaraderie and community spirit. Congratulations to all the coaches, parents and nippers from SSLC who helped make the event a memorable success.
