Stefan Kruger has officially taken over as the head coach of Helderberg Rugby Club.

After joining the club’s coaching structures last season โ€“ working primarily with the third and fourth teams โ€“ the 41-year-old has been tasked with leading the first team for the upcoming season.

Kruger, originally from Durbanville, brings a wealth of academic and international experience to the role. He holds a degree in sports science from Stellenbosch University and a postgraduate certificate in education, blending technical sports knowledge with an educational background.

Kruger spent time in the UK as well as in South Korea before settling in the Helderberg. He also held positions at Wynberg Boys’ High School before spending four years as rugby coach at Parel Vallei High School from 2014.

A five-year stint followed at Paul Roos Gymnasium, where he was mentored by former professional player Cornรฉ Uys.

Kruger recently made a career change to a professional role in Somerset West, working as an operations manager at a local business which allowed him to step into this leadership position at the club.

Following a difficult season for Berge last year, Kruger is aware of the expectations. His primary focus is not just on results, but on internal club structure.

“My goal is to get the club culture right and have one culture throughout,” Kruger says.

I want the club aligned, so we work together and not against each other. We have a proud history and we need a programme in place to be a dominant club again.

The immediate objective on the field is clear: finish in the top eight and build a squad that can consistently compete.

Berge has completed a productive pre-season with several new player signings. Kruger is currently focusing on squad depth, ensuring players get exposure at various levels to prepare for the season’s demands.

Kruger is currently rotating players across all levels to ensure that when the season hits its peak, the talent pool is deep enough to withstand the grind.

To give the local community a preview of the new-look squad, the club will host Rugby Reloaded, an event that will feature two Helderberg sides playing against each other, serving as both a trial and a showcase for the fans.

“It’s still early days and there is a lot of work to do,” Kruger points out. “But we are excited to put on a show for the locals.”

The Rugby Reloaded pre-season tournament will be hosted by Helderberg Rugby Club at Charles Morkel Stadium in Strand on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 March.

It will feature fast-paced, 20-minute-a-side matches aimed at providing competitive, high-energy, and action-packed preparation for the upcoming rugby season.

Helderberg will have two teams in action, while other teams that will vie for the title include Maties, Hamiltons (two teams), UWC, Sir Lowrians and All Saints.
