Following a two-year hiatus, road runners finally took to the streets of Cape Town for the 2022 TotalSports Two Oceans Ultramarathon on Easter Sunday (17 April). The half marathon (21,1 km) was held on Saturday (16 April). Organisers of the iconic race were only granted an event permit by the City of Cape Town last Wednesday (13 April), as the municipality had received objections from churches in the town of Fish Hoek as the event was held on Easter Sunday. Thousands of local and international runners laced-up and took off from the starting line in Main Road, Newlands for the 51st edition of the popular ultramarathon (56 km). South African Gerda Steyn claimed her third consecutive win and shattered the women’s ultramarathon record of 3:30:36, winning in a time of 3:29:42 at the finish line at UCT’s rugby field in Rondebosch. Another South African runner, Irvette van Zyl, claimed second place with another record-breaking time of 3:30:31. The men’s ultramarathon was won by Ethiopian runner Edndale Belachew (3:09:05), with South African Nkosikhona Mhlakwana crossing the line in second place just three seconds after the winner.Photo: Jaco Marais/Netwerk24
