Helderberg audiences will have an exclusive opportunity to experience a critically acclaimed musical exploring the complexities of modern life when Actress premieres locally this April.
The Drama Factory in Strand will host the Western Cape premiere of the multiple award-winning production from Wednesday 8 to Saturday 12 April, bringing a deeply relatable story about balancing life’s competing demands to local theatre enthusiasts.
Actress follows a woman attempting to excel in her various roles as actress, wife, mother, daughter and teacher while managing mounting pressures. The narrative charts an emotional journey through stress and success, auditions and triumph, ultimately searching for peace amid life’s chaos.
The production features eight original compositions by Bruce Dennill that guide audiences through this complex emotional landscape.
Songs range from quiet, introspective moments to powerful showstoppers, each designed to illuminate the protagonist’s shifting between her various life roles.
The musical has garnered significant recognition within South Africa’s theatre community. Lead actress and co-creator Talia Kodesh earned the prestigious Naledi Theatre Award for Best Actress in a Musical, while the production claimed a Broadway World South Africa Award for Best New Musical.
With previous credits that include Beauty and the Beast, RENT and We Will Rock You, Kodesh describes starring in her own creation as the fulfilment of a long-held dream. Her collaboration with composer Dennill has produced a work she believes will resonate deeply with new audiences.
The production benefits from an accomplished creative team led by director Daniel Geddes, with Sarah Roberts handling set and costume design and Denis Hutchinson managing lighting. Together, this team has accumulated multiple Naledi, Fleur Du Cap and Vita awards throughout their distinguished careers.
Dennill brings diverse artistic experience as an award-winning arts writer and musician whose compositions have appeared in television shows, including Isidingo and Going Nowhere Slowly. Stephen van Niekerk completes the cast as “Random Props Guy”, described as an intriguing and pivotal character.

Local audiences can experience Actress across seven performances: opening 8 April at 17:00, continuing with evening shows Wednesday through Friday at 19:30, and concluding with a weekend matinée and evening performances.
