The bail application hearing of four suspects accused of murdering a police officer has been postponed to tomorrow (Thursday) 19 January.
Constable Surprise Kwezi Mnqabe (33) lost his life in Phaliso Street in Asanda Village on Christmas Day (Sunday 25 December).
He succumbed to stab and gunshot wounds sustained in the incident, which reportedly occurred between 06:30 and 06:45.
A firearm suspected to have been used in the murder of the officer was recovered from one of the suspects’ homes shortly after the murder.
The accused, Nelson Motumi (27), Bongisizwe Dyongo (26), Athenkosi Matutu (21) and Unathi Mpaliso (25), appeared in the Strand Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 10 January (“Four murder accused back in the docks,” DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 11 January).
Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani confirmed the suspects will remain in custody until their formal bail application this week.
Details about why Mnqabe was in Lwandle after finishing his shift at Lingelethu West Police Station are still unclear.
