Meet Macassar’s new spiritual anti-crime committee

A new Macassar Spiritual Crime Prevention Committee was elected at a special meeting on Sunday 14 August. The comittee comprises religious leaders of the community, banding together with the aim of curbing crime by appealing to people’s values, especially those acquired through the tenets of faith, and through pastoral influence. The move comes amid concerns about serious crime escalating beyond control in Macassar, which has induced authorities to join forces with spiritual leaders to boost crime-fighting efforts. Pictured (in front) are executive members of the committee: Lt Col Markus Mbangu (Macassar police station commander), Japie Martin (chairperson), Abraham Manuel (deputy chair) and Auriel September (secretary). Behind are additional members: Ali Abrahams (deputy secretary), Dawid Plaatjies, Sagaruis Lindert, Saul Claasen, Ida Present, Sibonhiseni Magadla, Steven de Koker and Henry Swartz.
