Macassar RFC came out victorious in an impressive showing against Kylemore RFC, cementing a 51-17 win in a Super League C match at Riverside Park on Saturday (7 May).
Superstar Breyton Kleyn scored a hat-trick of tries as the hosts ran riot against a hapless Kylemore outfit, who have now yielded consecutive losses. The loyal supporters, who came out in droves, were treated to a thrilling encounter.
It was Kylemore that set the pace early on, playing with width and spreading the ball at all costs – an entertaining brand of rugby that can so easily be wobbly if one’s defensive strategies are not up to par.
The visitors found it difficult to penetrate the firm MC Boys’ defence in the match of two halves.
Kylemore made a convincing start to the game, taking play deep into Macassar territory, and it was not long before they opened the scoring through a try by Morgan Mars, who received a brilliant offload from R Solo-mons, and dashed through the defence from 40 m out.
The absence of the reliable Arno Linders left a gap in the tight facets, as the MC Boys struggled for momentum in the first half. However, the hosts managed to rack up some points through a try by winger Zenodene Isaacs. Bradley Daniels adding the extra two points and succeeded with a penalty as the teams went into the break with the visitors leading 10-12.
After some stern words and reassurance from the coaching staff at the break, the hosts looked to give the MC faithful what they deserve. They showed urgency and hassled the visitors, who battled to handle the pressure.
Kleyn crossed the whitewash two minutes into the second stanza, following slick handling and phase play (15-12).
Soon after, Isaacs crossed over for his second of the afternoon (20-12).
Lock forward Oliver Gila had an impressive showing together with loosehead prop Wilbur Smith, who can’t seem to put a foot wrong this season.
With discipline at the rucks, the home side put up a dominant forward display Gila and Clint Stewart setting the tone. They well supported by the slick service from Ashwin Davids in a final-quarter display that saw no less than three intercept tries from the hosts as the pressure mounted against the unsettled Kylemore.
Kleyn (2) and Daniels (1) contributed 21 intercept pointers as the MC Boys put the game beyond the visitors’ reach (41-12).
Although Kylemore were outscored in the second half, they made up for their errors with enthusiasm and improvisation which impressed Macassar RFC coach Chris Langeveld
This coming weekend, the MC Boys face another stern challenge from visitors CPUT.
