Breyton Kleyn, who took to the field as a replacement, had a dream debut scoring a hat-trick of tries, as Macassar RFC romped to an emphatic 57-7 win over Elsies River United in their second Super League C encounter at Riverside Park in Macassar on Saturday (9 April).
Once again, the MC Boys delivered a powerful display in very unnerving windy conditions. The home side was virtually unbreakable on defence, while they pounced on point-scoring opportunities that came their way.
Macassar dominated from start to finish, scoring three tries inside the opening 30 minutes, to close out the first half with 24-7. Tries by flanker Enver Eyman, lock Oliver Gila and wing Dylan Jafta allowed the home side to pull ahead early in the match.
The visitors, meanwhile, just didn’t turn up and looked flat for the majority of the encounter, only managing a first-half score for their efforts through lock Jason Daniels. Johagim Isaacs added the extras.
The second half proved to be an all-royal blue affair as the hosts capitalised on possession to extend the first half lead with five more tries.
Under-20 youngster Kleyn’s spacial awareness and speed stood out for the hosts, while Garth de Bruin put in a clinical shift in the number 10 jersey. In the forward pack, Jahan Lavin was impressive in the tight facets together with loosehead strongman Wilbur Smith, who is in red hot form.
“I think this team has a lot more to offer. We know that we left quite a few tries out there, but what a fantastic performance from everyone, especially u-20 youngsters Kleyn and Ashwin Davids, who are showing they can compete at a high level,” said captain Clint Stewart.
The result leaves the MC Boys in a respectable position on the Super League C log. They must now prepare for a derby clash against Eerste River RFC in two weeks, but will earn a much-needed break before then.
