Pioneering explorer Riaan Manser is looking for five matric learners to join him on a once in a lifetime adventure to Antarctica.

The Matrics in Antarctica programme is now open to current Grade 11 and 12 learners countrywide, with interested youths having until Monday 31 October to enter.

The group will fly from Cape Town International Airport on an ALCI alusion cargo plane and land on the block of ice that Antarctica is. They will be hosted at the Russian scientific base, Novolazarevskaya, for the six days.

They’ll spend their time learning about the Antarctic, exploring its beauty, hiking, participating in science experiments and a litter cleaning initiative, and mucg more.

Once the entries close, the top 100 entrants will be chosen, before it is narrowed down to the top 50. The top 10 will fittingly be announced on Antarctica Day (Thursday 1 December). Next January, top 10 learners will embark on a bootcamp at De Hoop Nature Reserve in the Overberg, whereafter the top five winners will be announced.

“Matrics in Antarctica is on a unique mission to not only drive awareness around the effects of climate change, but to actually instill a willingness by role-players to deliver concrete results,” Manser pointed out. “This is why it’s so important to get the youth, the future leaders of tomorrow, excited about conservation but also understand that action on their part is what will guarantee a preserved Earth.”

Grade 11 and matrics with a passion for adventure and conservation, who want to explore the beauty that lies in Earth’s southernmost continent, can enter online at www.matricsinantarctica.co.za.
