A total of 1 500 animals in Macassar and Eerste River will benefit from an annual mass animal sterilisation programme this month (September).
The initiative, which is being funded by the City of Cape Town, is being done by members of the Cape Animal Welfare Forum (CAWF).
“This year we celebrate 10 years of the Mass Animal Sterilisation Project [MASP] and send grateful thanks to the City for its continued support and recognition that animal welfare is a critical part of community health and upliftment initiatives,” said CAWF chairperson Karen de Klerk. “This year’s MASP is a positive intervention in support of healthier communities, and will reduce unwanted litters substantially, in this way reducing the heavy burden placed on welfare organisations around the metropole.
The 12 CAWF members who collectively sterilise 1 500 animals from Macassar and Eerste River are the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, Animal Rescue Organisation, Animal Anti-Cruelty League, Help a Paw, Glen-Graze Rescue Sanctuary (Somerset West), Giving is Living, Mdzananda, Animal Welfare Society (AWS) Helderberg (Gordon’s Bay), Animal Welfare Society of SA, Vetsol, Envirovet and The Outreach Programme (TOP, Helderberg). Evervet and Farm Paws are assisting as non CAWF members.
“The City is very proud to continue this long-standing relationship with our partners in the animal-welfare sector,” said Patricia van der Ross, Mayoral Committee member for Community Services and Health. “So much good work has happened over the last decade, and we look forward to yet another successful mass sterilisation campaign.
“Thanks so much to all member organisations who continue to lend their support to this initiative and their commitment to making it a success.”
