It’s that time of the year again, when local NPO Masikhule calls on the Helderberg community to Cast On 4 Kids for Mandela Day.
The annual campaign encourages communities to knit or crochet items for the young children in the 70-plus early childhood development (ECD) centres that the organisation works in within marginalised communities of the basin.
This year Masikhule is calling on locals to prepare knitted beanies, bears, balls and blankets, and to bring the woollens to its Mandela Day event at Urban Voice Church in Somerset West, where they can join them for 67 minutes to knit or crochet, or just to drop off their donation. Small fleece blankets are also welcome.
Locals are reminded that the children served are all between three months and five years of age.
The event will be held at the church in Schapenberg Road on Friday 17 July, from 11:00 and 14:00. The team will distribute the items to over 2 500 children in the ECD centres from Sir Lowry’s Pass to Macassar and Eerste River.
