False Bay High School in Strand celebrated its 20th anniversary earlier this month.
The school, which started as a one-bedroom flat in Somerset West, has since gone from strength to strength and boasts a consistent 100% matric pass rate for 12 consecutive years.
At the school’s anniversary celebration in its hall, principal and founder Herman Janse van Rensburg recalled the many hurdles he and his wife Lisa had to overcome for the school to flourish. “It was always my dream to open my own school and, when I finally did on 16 January 1999, I felt as if I was finally living out a dream,” he said.
The school moved to its current location in 2007, a house where Janse van Rensburg and his family resided in during his youth. “The Afrikaans classroom was my bedroom,” he recalled.
All members of the family have been actively involved in the development of the school, with two of the principal’s children designing its logo.
At the event Henk Punt, circuit manager at the provincial education department, spoke of the importance of sacrifice and hard work in reaching one’s goals. He also congratulated the school’s class of 2018 and wished the current learners well for the future.
