South African dance virtuoso Gregory Maqoma is set to unveil his latest masterpiece, Genesis, a pioneering dance opera that promises to redefine contemporary performance art when it premieres at the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch this month.

The world premiere, running from Wednesday 18 to Sunday 21 February, marks Maqoma’s triumphant return to the venue following his critically acclaimed productions Exit/Exist (2023) and Cion: Requiem of Ravel’s Bolero (2024). The latest work fuses dance, live music and poetry in what critics are already calling a visceral exploration of creation and transformation.

“Returning to the Baxter Theatre with this production is profoundly meaningful,” Maqoma explained. “The Baxter has been more than a venue in my journey; it has been a partner in my becoming as a dancer and choreographer.

“Its support allows me to confront time itself in Genesis: its violence, its grace and its invitation to begin again.”

The internationally renowned choreographer has assembled an exceptional creative team for the production.

Live musical performances will be delivered by Mthwakazi Chosi, Annalyzer, Yogin Sulaphin and Xolilisle Bongwana under the musical direction of Nhlanhla Mahangu. Poet Anelisa Phewa will bring emotional depth through spoken word, while celebrated writer Karthika Nair provides the libretto.

Maqoma, founder of Vuyani Dance Theatre and director of Gregory Maqoma Industries, has garnered international recognition throughout his career.

His work has toured more than 100 cities across five continents, earning him prestigious accolades including the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French government and a 2024 Olivier Award nomination.

The production features costume design by Jacques van der Watt, lighting by Oliver Hauser and set design by Willy Cesar. Working alongside collaborator Shannel Winlock-Pailman, Maqoma has pushed his Vuyani Dance Theatre ensemble to new artistic heights.

There are only five performances scheduled – evening shows at 19:30 and a Saturday matinée at 15:00.

 Following its Baxter premiere Genesis moves to Gauteng’s Joburg Theatre in March.
