Motorists and residents of Somerset West will have to endure possible traffic delays and more inconvenience as essential work is done to streets in the town’s central business district.
In a statement, the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has informed residents and road users it is constructing new kerbs and sidewalks as well as a new stormwater infrastructure along certain roads in the area. The work is expected to continue until the first week of December, pending delays and unforeseen challenges.
The roads impacted on weekdays from 07:30 to 18:00 are:
. Main Road between Fagan Street and Andries Pretorius Street;
. The intersection of Hunters Lane and Andries Pretorius Street; and
. Andries Pretorius Street, from Fagan Street to Lourens Street.
Flag personnel will be on site to guide traffic, and pedestrians are asked to abide by the signage and use alternative walkways during the construction period.
“I want to thank residents, visitors and all road users in advance for their patience while this project is ongoing,” said Rob Quintas, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility. “Roadworks always comes with a level of inconvenience, and the best is to avoid these streets as far as possible. We are trying our best to complete this project on time so that we can limit the impact on commuters and pedestrians.”
