Many roads around the Helderberg are scheduled for resurfacing over the next few weeks.

A substantial multi-road resurfacing project in Strand, Somerset West and Nomzamo has commenced.

The roadworks, a project of the The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate, began last Monday (25 March) and are scheduled for completion by the end of May, weather permitting and provided there are no unforeseen delays.

The work is scheduled to take place weekdays from 07:30 to 17:00.

In Strand, the roadworks will include resurfacing and painting of road markings along roads in Rusthof, Lochnerhof, Goedehoop and Gants Plaza. This includes Forbes, Second and Fifth streets, Jacobs Avenue, Lower Gordon’s Bay Road, and Wentzel, Abattoir, Bosch, Gordon, Alex Pienaar, Victoria, Scholtz, Leipoldt, Scarbrow, Heinecke, Tulbagh, Da Gama, Mills, Napier and De Vos Streets, Mckay Close, Mills Street, Newton Drive, and Pretorius Avenue.

A number of roads in Somerset West are included in the project: Drama Street, Parel Vallei Road, Solomon and Jakaranda Street, South Avenue, Meadow Lane, Lourensford Road, Vergelegen Street.

Also, Coldicott Avenue, Marais Street, Voortrekker and Schapenberg Roads, Coronation Avenue, Reservoir and Van der Merwe streets, Hendriksz and Silverboomkloof roads, Stellenhof, Columbus and Audas streets, and Cabernet Drive.

In Nomzamo the roadworks will cover Mxolisi, Ndzuzo, Edward and NtangasStreets.

“This is quite a big undertaking, with a number of roads worked on concurrently throughout Strand and Nomzamo,” said Rob Quintas, Mayoral Committee member for Urban Mobility.

“Proactive maintenance work is not only necessary for ensuring the safety of road users and overall user experience of motorists, but also to prolong the life span of our public assets.

“I am particularly pleased to report that this project has taken 15 local community members on board, who will gain meaningful work experience and skills development through the process. On behalf of the City, I would like to thank all road users, businesses and residents for their patience while this work is under way.

“While no additional congestion is expected, we ask that road users please exercise caution during this period by lowering their speed, paying attention to road signs, being alert around the roadworks area, looking out for uneven road surfaces and being mindful of the construction workers.”

Quintas added it is very important that this work is done ahead of the upcoming winter rains.
