The City of Cape Townโs Urban Mobility Directorate has officially launched a major road-resurfacing initiative across nine Somerset West neighborhoods this week, aimed at repairing worn infrastructure and improving commuter safety.
The works are scheduled to run through Friday 6 November.
City teams will be active on-site on weekdays between 07:00 and 17:00. The municipality noted that all operations are weather-permitting and subject to potential unforeseen delays.
The multi-suburb project covers residential areas including Audas Estate, Golden Hill, La Concorde, Land en Zeezicht, Roundhay, Stuartโs Hill, The Link, Van der Stel and Westridge.

According to project specifications released by the City the resurfacing operation includes milling and removing the old, worn road surface, laying a fresh layer of smooth asphalt across the full width of the roadway, repairing and realigning damaged kerbs along affected streets, and repainting clear road markings once resurfacing is completed.
Rob Quintas, Mayco member for Urban Mobility, acknowledged the localised disturbance the construction would bring while emphasising its long-term benefits for motorists.
“Roadworks can be frustrating, particularly for residents and those who make regular use of the roads being worked on. These resurfacing projects are an important investment in safer, smoother and more comfortable journeys, while also helping to reduce vehicle operating costs over time.”
He urged motorists to allow for additional travel time and seek alternative transit options where feasible.
“Traffic in both directions will be affected so, where possible, motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and use alternative routes. By working together and allowing a little extra time for journeys, we can keep Cape Town moving.”
Resurfacing crews will be working across the following streets:
- Audas Estate: Bright Street, Burg Street, Rue De Jacqueline Street, and Ritz Street
- Golden Hill: Upper Mountain Road, Ibis Street, Suikerbekkie Street and Hillcrest Road
- La Concorde: Hoรซveld Road
- Land en Zeezicht: Campbell Lane, Paris Road, Slabbert Road, Theunisen Street, Drommedaris Road, and Reiger Avenue
- Roundhay: Dickens Avenue, Drama Street, New Street, Handel Road, Hopkins Street, Malan Street, Martin Prince Road, Pienaar Street, and Prince Road
- Stuartโs Hill: Van Riebeeck Street, Haarlem Street, Mcleod Street, and Radloff Street
- The Link: View Mount Road
- Van der Stel: Rustenburg Avenue
- Westridge: Nerina Avenue, West Road, South Avenue, East Road, and Freesia Avenue
The City has asked all road users to exercise extra caution while construction is underway. Drivers are advised to reduce their speed, strictly follow temporary traffic signs, stay vigilant around active construction crews and navigate uneven road surfaces with care.
