Locals are advised of an extensive road resurfacing initiative launched by the City of Cape Town and spanning three Helderberg communities, with construction teams beginning work today (Friday 13 March).
The ambitious two-month project will see 29 road segments across Strand, Nomzamo and Gordon’s Bay upgraded with new asphalt surfaces, targeting improved road safety and reduced vehicle maintenance costs for residents. Work is scheduled to continue until Thursday 14 May, operating during weekday hours from 07:00 to 17:00, weather permitting.
“Residents and business owners in Strand, Nomzamo and Gordon’s Bay can expect improved road safety conditions and riding quality, as well as decreased vehicle user costs once this project is complete,” said Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee member for Urban Mobility.
The project encompasses more than basic resurfacing, with teams conducting:
- Complete asphalt replacement on affected road segments;
- Repair of damaged kerbs and drainage channels; and
- Full reinstatement of road markings removed during construction.
“Our teams will do their best to complete the road resurfacing as efficiently as possible. Maintaining these roads is one of the ways in which we keep Cape Town moving,” Quintas added.
Strand will see the most extensive work, with 15 roads undergoing resurfacing: Aerodrome Road, Altena Road, Boschendal Road, Bosman Street, Mikro Avenue, Da Gama Street, Daniel Street, De Beers Road, Cooke Street, Thompson Street, Donkin Street, Enslin Street, Mynhardt Street, Niehaus Street and Steyn Street.

Nomzamo residents can expect construction on nine streets: Magatya Street, Milton Street, Phaliso Road, Lumka Street, Tyilana Street, Nkume Street, Skoji Street, Saphepha Street and Simon Street.

Gordon’s Bay will see five road segments upgraded: Chilwan Crescent, Clarkson Street, Marcus Crescent, The Mews and James Close.

Motorists should prepare for significant delays, as bidirectional traffic will be affected throughout the construction period. The City advises road users to:
- Plan additional travel time for journeys through affected areas;
- Consider alternative routes where possible;
- Exercise extreme caution around construction zones;
- Reduce speed and remain alert for uneven road surfaces;
- Follow all road signage and traffic control measures; and
- Watch for construction workers in active work zones.
