A recent football trip to Madrid, Spain, was nothing short of a dream come true for 16-year-old Miguel Snyders of Macassar.

The promising young talent, who currently plays for Eagles Academy, spent an unforgettable time honing his skills and experiencing the pinnacle of international youth football, a journey made possible through the efforts of Eagles Academy, Sim Tours, and a supportive community.

The highlight of Miguel’s trip was undoubtedly playing against a top Spanish team. “The atmosphere was electric and it was an incredible experience, playing against such skilled opponents,” he shared.

Miguel, a Grade 10 learner at Macassar High School, gained invaluable insights into the tactical side of the game. He noted the stark contrast in playing styles: “Spanish teams are known for their possession-based style, and adapting to that was a big learning curve for me.

“The coaching was much more focused on details and strategy. In South Africa, we tend to focus more on athleticism and raw talent, but in Spain, it’s all about finesse and precision.”

His dedication paid off, with Miguel observing significant improvements in his game. “My ball control and vision on the field improved significantly. Playing against top-level opponents forced me to think on my feet and make quick decisions.”

A pivotal moment of inspiration came when his team triumphed over a Spanish opponent in a crucial match. “It was a huge confidence booster,” Miguel recalled. “It showed me that with hard work and determination, we can compete with anyone.

“Off the pitch, the experience was equally enriching. Visiting the iconic Santiago Bernabรฉu stadium was a major highlight. The history and architecture were breathtaking,” he said.

Miguel also enjoyed sampling local tapas and exploring Madrid’s vibrant nightlife. The trip also provided an opportunity to forge new bonds: “I met some fantastic players from other countries.”

Miguel’s football journey began at Macassar FC, where he played as a youngster, earning accolades as top goal scorer and best forwarder of the year. His talent was quickly recognised during a one-day match at Curro, leading to an immediate selection by Eagles Academy after he scored the winning goal in a 2-1 victory against Cape Town Spurs. He has been with Eagles Academy for two years now, and it was through them, in collaboration with Sim Tours, that this incredible opportunity to train and play in Madrid arose.

The trip was made possible through dedicated fundraising efforts and the generous contributions of sponsors and community members. Miguel extended heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported the fundraisers and especially acknowledges Samuel Engelbrecht for his significant contribution towards his trip.

For young players back at Macassar FC who aspire to similar experiences, Miguel offers a powerful message: “Believe in yourself and work hard. Opportunities like this don’t come easily, but if you’re dedicated and passionate about the sport, you can achieve your dreams.”

Reflecting on his international experience, Miguel’s immediate goal is to bring his newfound knowledge and skills back to South Africa. His sights are also firmly set on the future: “I’d also love to get noticed by national team scouts.”

In a single word, Miguel sums up his entire Madrid adventure: “Incredible. The trip was a dream come true, and I’ll always cherish the memories and lessons I gained.”
