What started as a weekly cricket match between two teams in Macassar three years ago has evolved to a full-on weekend social league that comprises 12 teams and attracts well over a 1 000 spectators.
The teams are divided into juniors and seniors, and although not affiliated to any official body, are organised with a fixture list and log table Some teams have kits and the finals are looming in the coming weeks, where the winners will be awarded medals and a trophy.
According to William Claasen, who is one of the main organisers driving the initiative, the social get-together was started as a means to keep youngsters from the community, who would otherwise just loiter around and often get into trouble, busy. Claasen is also the chairperson of Macassar Junior Rugby Club.
“It’s proven really effective so far and has grown to become a weekly highlight in our community. Our youth are the leaders of tomorrow and we want to ensure that we create opportunities to instil values such as discipline and responsibility, and at the same time motivate them to achieve their goals. Our community traditionally is very competitive on the sports field and this initiative is another display of the talent and passion among our youngsters,” said Claasen.
The teams play in an open park near Macassar Primary School and despite the less-than-ideal facilities, they have made the most of what they have to entertain and enthral spectators who comprise of friends, families and entire neighbourhoods.
Some of the teams have organised their own kits and playing equipment, but many are donated or put together by the community where everyone pitches in.
“Donations and sponsorships will go a long way. We are also organising a fundraiser at the end of August and will appreciate all the support we can get,” added Claasen.
He said that the league will take a short break over winter but will bounce back again early in September.
