A wildfire is currently raging on the Lourensford mountain slopes.

Fire crews from Strand, Sir Lowry’s Pass and Somerset West fire stations are on the scene battling the inferno.

In a post on Facebook, users mentioned they can smell the smoke all the way in Stellenbosch.

According to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, they received an emergency call alerting them to the blaze at 16:22.

“Currently we have approximately 40 firefighters on scene. This is an extensive area of vegetation that is burning and the fire area has been divided into two divisions, in order to contain the blaze,” he related.

At 18:20, five fire engines, four water tankers, bush tenders and skid units were on the scene.

“The fire is not contained and crews will work tirelessly throughout the night. No property is in danger at this stage. Standby personnel have been activated to bring more resources to assist.”
