Altogether 80 individuals showed great interest in ensuring a cleaner and safer community by participating in a clean-up held in Nomzamo. The campaign was organised by the Strong Schools Community Collaborative and was focused in the vicinity of ACJ Phakade Primary School, where a retention dam has become a stagnant settling place for rubbish. “We had community leaders, volunteers and various organisations join in the clean-up fun. It was a huge success,” said Ward 85 Councillor Chantal Cerfontein, who also rolled up her sleeves for the cause. The City of Cape Town supplied the refuse bags for the campaign and championed collection afterwards.

Local ward councillor Chantal Cerfontein addressing participants of the Lourens River clean-up campaign which was hosted by the Western Cape Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) in Strand on Monday.
The initiative was held under the banner of the Clear River Campaign, which was initiated in 2014 after government called on residents to share in the collective responsibility of ensuring a cleaner environment.
“It takes one cent to fill a million and it takes one person to make a big change. I have one great believe and that is to pay it forward,” implored Cerfontein at the event. “We have to look after our country. We cannot allow anyone to destroy what we fight for. We must protect our hometown and our water resources.”
DWS representative Sandile Mawela talked about the importance of water resources, which must be appreciated and looked after, and highlighted the effects of river pollution.
