The Helderberg Robotics Club competed in the World Robot Olympiad (WRO) Western Cape Regionals, held at Curro Durbanville on Saturday 5 August. Pictured are avid roboteers who received certificates for their participation in the event, held to mark National Science Week (31 July to 5 August). Two teams were invited to compete in the Future Engineers category of the national championships, which took place on Saturday 2 September in Parklands on the West Coast, and the RoboMission category in Gauteng on Saturday 9 September.

Raaid Fajandar and Michael Shepstone competed in the Future Engineers category, the most advanced category for roboteers. The challenge is to build a robot from scratch with a steering drive that moves around a track autonomously. It needs to be programmed with AI to assess the course before circumventing, making decisions and avoiding obstacles. They used Arduino Microcontroller and 3 Raspberry Picos to drive a colour sensor, four time-of-flight sensors, an ultrasonic sensor, a servo, DRV8833 motor driver and lidar sensor, and clinched first place.

Johan Benade (international head judge), Michael Shepstone, Cody Williams (coach), Raaid Fajandar and Hansell Williams (provincial judge).
