It was an action-packed weekend of 50-over local club cricket, headlined by a tense encounter at Radloff Park, where Helderberg Cricket Club (HCC) held their nerve to defend a modest total and claim a thrilling 19-run victory over Somerset West Cricket Club (SWCC) on Saturday 24 October.

SWCC won the toss and elected to field, putting HCC in to bat. The visitors anchored their innings around opener Junaid Sylvester, who played a patient knock of 72. Quick contributions from Dexter Hindley (29) and Ebrahiem Latief (12) helped push HCC to 163/7 in their allotted overs.

Chasing 164 for victory, SWCC faltered against a masterclass in spin and seam control. Latief delivered an extraordinary player-of-the-match spell, picking up 5/21. Supported by Sylvester (1/22) and Gregan Mouers (1/25), Helderberg bowled out SWCC for 144 in 47.1 overs to seal the win.

Meanwhile, Strand Cricket Club (SCC) pulled off a composed chase to defeat hosts Mamre Cricket Club following a hard-fought battle.

Mamre won the toss and opted to bat, getting off to a flying start as Strand’s opening attack struggled with line and length.

The hosts surged ahead, comfortably passed the 100-run mark inside 20 overs.

However, SCC mounted a strong mid-innings comeback through disciplined bowling by Morne Daars and Sharwaan Naidoo. Ricardo Naidoo (5 wickets) and Darrel Filander (3 wickets) then ripped through the middle and lower order to restrict Mamre to 205/10.

The visitors’ chase started shakily with opener Elvin Waterboer falling in the second over. Steadying partnerships between Yasin January and Tian Terbulence kept Strand on course at 113/2 after 20 overs. Lesley Taylor (60*) anchored the innings, allowing Ricardo Naidoo to hit the winning runs in the 47th over to complete a superb all-round effort.

HHCC’s weekend struggles continued on Sunday 25 October as visiting UCT secured a five-wicket victory.

After UCT won the toss and fielded, the local lads put up a much-improved batting performance, lasting their full allotment to post 196 runs.

However, UCT’s top order proved clinical in the run chase, reaching 199/5 in 46 overs to wrap up the match with 4 overs to spare.
