In an extremely tough final league game for St George’s RFC in Super League A, the Lulu Boys suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Villager RFC at Gustrouw Sports Ground on Saturday (17 August).

The final score of 47-13 was clear evidence of the dominance by a Villager team that was packed with provincial stars. The Lulu Boys initially offered good opposition by playing with courage and determination in the first half. Unfortunately the second half painted a different picture, with Villager eventually gaining the upperhand and taking control of the game.

Although the score was not in their favour, every player of St George’s RFC gave their all.

Ronaldo Daniels and Jody Dramat each dotted down a try for the home side, while Kyle Alexander slotted one penalty to make up the Lulu Boys’ points tally.

Although the result was not what the Strand team had hoped for, they showed that they are capable of matching forces with any team, and will remain in the top tier of club rugby next season.

In the another Super League A outing, Helderberg’s fixture against Maties was postponed. The latter is currently in seventh place on the log with two games in-hand. The students have a chance to fight their way back and defend their title, as they face last-placed CPUT tonight (Wednesday 21 August).

Maties are likely to lock horns with eighth placed Berge next weekend. The men from Strand will most likely finish their campaign outside the top six.

Meanwhile, Strand RFC have breathed a sigh of relief after securing a crucial 17-7 victory over Collegians in Super League B. The win propels them to 12th place on the log, narrowly avoiding the relegation zone for now. Langa, in 13th place, faces a tense battle to maintain their league status.

Both All Saints (14th place) and Kylemore (15th place) have matches in-hand and could overtake Langa. The outcome of their clashes tonight against UWC and Collegians respectively, will be keenly watched.

In Super League C, Strand United cemented their position in the league after a resounding 55-12 triumph over Busy Bees. The result ensures their safety from relegation, sparking jubilant celebrations among players and fans. Their impressive performance led to the relegation of Blue Jets, Masiphumelele and the absent Paarl.

Macassar strengthened their position in the top six with a convincing 47-5 victory over Gardens. They now have a chance to not only deny second-placed Primrose a semi-final spot, but also claim the top spot on the log table when they face Rangers tonight.
