A rescued pitbull and a dedicated animal-welfare centre inspired a former Strand resident to host a fundraiser to raise funds for them.
Annalies Schmaltz recently rescued a pitbull named Rex, which was up for euthanising by local rescue centres if he wasn’t adopted or claimed after 10 days.
According to Schmaltz, many people make pitbulls out to be aggressive breeds, who are prone to fighting, but Rex wasn’t aggressive and she spent four days searching for a place willing to take him in.
“I had to make a plan, and I came across Human & Animal Welfare Koinonia (Hawk), which is located outside Malmesbury. Someone there, André Verbiest, took Rex in.”
When Schmaltz dropped Rex off at Hawk she noticed the premises needed some work, and that the organisation was in need of donations and food for its animals. “I decided to host an event, which I named ‘Line dancers dancing for Hawk’.”
The event will be hosted at the Somerset West Town Hall this Saturday (23 July) from 14:00 to 17:00.
Line dancers from as far afield as Struisbaai and Hermanus have already confirmed they will attend the fundraiser.
Schmaltz is hosting the fundraiser in conjunction with her son Chris Jacobs, owner of Step It Up Line Dancing in Strand.
“Tickets will cost R100 per person plus a can of dog or cat food. If people don’t want to dance they can donate as well; every little bit helps,” Schmaltz said.
