I would like to draw the attention of DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette readers to the ongoing theft of municipal property – especially the exterior vibracrete wall of the traffic licensing department bordering Mountainside Boulevard, Gordon’s Bay.

This has been ongoing for about 12 months. So far, 84 panels have been stolen, not counting the missing uprights. An estimated cost for the horizontal panels is about R5 040, not including labour or uprights.

One may ask why not report it to the police. In Dennehof Road, also in Gordon’s Bay, is a pink block wall of approximately 100 m long. Over the past three years this has had in excess of 200 blocks stolen – also ongoing.

About three months ago I saw someone stealing these blocks and reported to Gordon’s Bay Police Station that a theft was in progress. I had to ask the officer to write down the details, as well as a description of the suspect for further action. After that, nothing occurred.

Thirty minutes later I returned to Dennehof Road, where the theft was an ongoing process – no police, nothing. I eventually gave up waiting and went home

Regarding the boundary wall of the licensing department, the replacement cost will eventually fall down to the ratepayers – you and I.

Maxine Bezuidenhout, spokesperson for the City’s Traffic Service, responds: Vandalism and theft of municipal infrastructure is an ongoing challenge, and it is true that this type of crime costs the City and other public entities millions of rand each year in repair and replacement costs. If you see or know of anyone who is deliberately damaging City-owned property and infrastructure, or you notice deliberate damage to property in your area, please report it to the City’s Public Emergency Communications Centre by dialling 021 480 7700 from a cellphone or 107 from a landline. Concerns about the non-responsiveness of the South African Police Service should please be directed to the respective police station.
