I would like to share some good news with DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette regarding the littering and trash at the Vineyard Centre, Somerset West.

After the newspaper published my letter and your sending it to the Cape Town Mayor’s Office, there was finally some positive action from the City Improvement District (CID) as I managed to establish it as being responsible for the cleaning of Somerset West streets and pavements (“Our area is being turned into rubbish heap”, DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 31 May). I contacted the CID manager Andrew Malgas, and after a very heated conversation he and his team cleaned the filth from the pavements there. He also undertook to clean the area daily from Monday to Friday.

The Vineyard Centre parking area, now a temporary minibus taxi rank and private property, has also been cleaned, but there is no commitment from centre manager Ivan Swanepoel to clean it daily. The Lourens Street Group will monitor the situation to ensure a safe, clean and respectable shopping area.

Thank you DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette for your support and assistance.

Emmy Holiday,

Somerset West
