Last Tuesday (1 March), Grade 10 to 12 art and literature learners of Helderberg International School eagerly departed for a long-awaited outing to the fascinating Irma Stern Museum in Rosebank, Cape Town. The keen young visitors were treated to a tour, which started off with an introductory talk on the artist Irma Stern and her life and passionate creativity, inspired by German Expressionism, her travels to exotic destinations in Africa and abroad and her eclectic collection of artefacts gathered over the years. Learners experienced every brightly coloured room, which showcased her artworks and collections in a lively manner and listened to a brief history of the works featured in each section, enabling students to discuss her work, then fill in a worksheet, sketching and analysing their favourite inspirational artwork. After a short break they were fortunate to view the current exhibition, Memórias da Madeira, on Stern’s stay on the island.
