Lawn bowlers in the basin representing Helderberg, Somerset West and Gordon’s Bay bowls clubs have to date done their clubs and area proud at the various Western Province competitions held in recent months.
Susan McKay-Vlok of Helderberg Bowls Club is the 2022-’23 Western Province Ladies Open Singles champion, beating Mo Louw from Mowbray in the final.
Miles Norman and Jenna McCourt, also from Helderberg Bowls Club, are the 2022-’23 Western Province Mixed Pairs champions after beating Adre Barnard and Anneke Buys in the semi-final. They withstood the challenge beating the Constantia pair of Andrew Wilson and Brenda Joubert by 22 shots to 12 in the final.
Stefan Koen from Somerset West Bowls Club had to overcome Neil Burkett from Mowbray in the Men’s Open Singles semi-final before beating Peter Harvey from Constantia, drawing three shots on the last end in the final to become the Western Province Men’s Open Singles champion.
Nick Byrne from Gordon’s Bay Bowling Club reached the semi-final in the Men’s Veteran Singles losing a tightly contested match to Tom Binns from Milnerton by 21 shots to 20.
Wim van Wyk from Somerset West Club reached the last eight of the Men’s Novice Singles losing to the eventual winner Jaco van Tonder from Durbanville by 21 shots to 18.
In the Men’s Flag competition the B-Side from Somerset West represented by Fred Kruger (captain-skip), Kulu Cruywagen (third), Marthinus Pool (second) and Chris Blom (lead) as well as Jacques du Preez (skip), Hennie Fourie (third), Wim van Wyk (second) and Mitch Ferreira won the Second Division of the WP Flag Competition after proving victorious in the 2B Section and then beating Durbanville, winner of the 1B Section, in the final.
During the All Cape Tournament held in the Boland, Stefan Koen (skip), Nico Taljaard (third), Dave Cuff (second) and Gareth Nell (lead) reached the semi–final of this tournament after winning their section.
In this tournament played between teams from Western Province, Boland, Eden and Border teams, Fred Kruger (skip), Jacques du Preez (second), Wim van Wyk (third) and Eric de Lange (lead) also won their section before loosing in the first round of the play–offs.
The next weeks will see the WP Fours and Fives being played with Men and Women’s teams from Somerset West, Helderberg, Gordon’s Bay and Strand entered in these competitions.
