World Hunger Day on Tuesday 28 May was commemorated with handouts to hundreds of children around the Helderberg.

To commemorate World Hunger Day, which was marked on Tuesday 28 May, a local non-profit organisation based in the Helderberg served 1 500 toddlers and pre-schoolers a nutritional snack, meal sachets of Maxi Blend smart food, while some schools received Vitakidz health supplements, and each child’s feet was washed and they received a warm pair of socks for winter.

The schools that form part of the Good Samaritan network, managed by Youth4Life, were also visited, and each child received a seed packet to take home to create a home garden, and to teach them the importance of growing their own food.

In all, 38 schools participated, made possible with sponsorship from Outside the Bowl Global, Wellspring NPC, Maxi Blend and ITAU Super Maize.

The Department of Health also handed out pamphlets and posters with important nutritional information, while the Department of Basic Education and of Agriculture, together with Starke Ayres (vegetable seed supplier), donated seeds to help establish 1 000 home gardens within the next few months.

In total, 11 444 meals were donated, along with 1 000 Nkosi bars, 5 000 Vitakidz portions were given to the ECDs, 300 Vitakidz portions were given to families, 4 144 Maxi Blend Smart Food portions were handed out as well as 1 000 portions of ITAU super maize.

There was excitement in the air at the gesture, organised by the Good Samaritan network and Youth4Life.
