Breyton Kleyn starred as the MC Boys hit their target of five log points as they scored a 31-26 victory over Scottsdene Central in their Super League C clash at Riverside Park, Macassar on Saturday afternoon (13 May).

Handling errors plagued both sides as they contended with a strong south-easter and the MC Boys’ ability to turn half-chances into tries swung the match in their favour.

Replacement flyhalf Garth de Bruin and winger Breyton Kleyn were prominent in a second half-surgency.

Strongman Nangamso Bukani crossed first with a converted score in the 18th minute to give the home side an early lead. Two early injury replacements to key players hampered proceedings for Macassar’s dominant forward display. Scottsdene live-wire scrumhalf Fabian Klazen spear headed the visitors as they sought parity.

Erno Bosch crossed over for an unconverted score to close a tightly contested first half 7-5.

It was the visitors who came out firing, with Beauton Otto crossing for a try that was too easily put together by the visitors after just one minute of play in the second stanza with captain and lock Charles Mcleod leading from the front (7-12).

The hosts were quick to respond with their best attacking play up to that point, with Burnodick Julius, Enver Eyman and Kenneth Scheffers all featuring strongly with their general play, to create space for speedster Kleyn to power over (14-12).

That kind of scoring sequence was to be repeated a few moments later when replacement Full-back Kyle Cookson and Garth de Bruin looked to put the game to bed with a converted score and penalty (24-12).

With a deteriorated forward pack, The MC Boys looked frail, and allowed the visitors to sneak in with a converted score by Doniel van Rooyen (24-19).

The home side attacking game was working though, and Breyton Kleyn rounded the defence for his second score of the match and took the home side clear (31-19).

The visitors’ captain Charl Mcleod scored at the death to put some respect to the scoreline (31-26).

It was far from ideal conditions in a powerful south-easterly, but to their credit, the MC Boys handled it magnificently well. Playing into the wind in the second half, Macassar capitalised on turn over possession with a high-tempo attacking nature which definitely paid dividends.

Replacement flyhalf Garth de Bruin and experienced forward Burnodick Julius were both sensational and played integral roles in the second half-surgency.

This Saturday (20 May) the MC Boys travel to Langa where they will face Busy Bees.
