Imagine recycling where the collector and person who drops off their rubbish are both incentivised.
This concept, already successfully rolled out in parts of Cape Town, was launched
Regenize is a company on a mission to create ways to contribute to the community and environment.
Chad Robertson, co-founder of Regenize, said the recycling services are free.
A decentralised recycling hub was launched and bins and bags are provided to households that are signed-up. “As you recycle you earn ‘remali’ (recycling imali), a virtual currency that can be exchanged at selected spaza shops in Lwandle for goods,” said Robertson.
“The more one recycles the more points are redeemed that can be used for groceries and goods at these spaza shops.
“We have been running Regenize for the past seven years. This green container behind me is called a recycling hub. We want to make recycling more inclusive.
“The recycling hub services up to 800 households, three of which we have in the community. When a household signs up they get a bin and knowledge how to recycle and to collect waste.
“We want to connect people and equip them to sort out their waste and receive something back for their waste.”
Ward 86 councillor Xolani Diniso said this is one of the best initiatives to come to his ward. “This concept that is now launched in Lwandle and Nomzamo was talked about for months on end,” he said. “I want to thank Regenize for coming out to our area and for choosing us. This project deals with minimising the waste and it rewards our residents for their waste. We believe that this project will grow in our community.”
Regenize also handed pamphlets out to educate residents of the area on what they can recycle and how.
