The Helderberg Netball Club is turning to the community for assistance in refurbishing its clubhouse that fell in a state of semi-disrepair after it was vandalised in 2019.

Located behind the Charles Morkel Stadium in Strand, the structure’s windows were broken and electrical wiring stolen.

Club secretary Claudine Tobie said both the clubhouse and netball courts needs urgent attention, especially with the upcoming netball season around the corner.

“Currently we can’t host any games due to the state of our clubhouse and the fact that we don’t have toilets or running water,” Tobie elaborated.

Ward 83 councillor Carl Punt mentioned the City of Cape Town had already erected a new fence around the netball courts to secure it from regular vandalism.

“The department is waiting for the tender to be finalised so further upgrades can be done to this property, including the clubhouse,” he said.

“That said, I hope that the netball club will put measures in place to prevent vandalism of such a great facility, as the responsibility lies with clubs to protect and look after the City facilities which they use.”

Tobie mentioned the club was unable to raise funds on its own, so it is reaching out to local businesses for support. “We need the following building materials (including for re-electrification and water reconnections): bricks, cement, toilets, basins, a kitchen sink, window and door frames, a door, windows and paint.”

She said giving a one-time monetary donation or to choose to become a team sponsor will not only help the team, but it will also mould the players into good netballers and, more importantly, into valuable members of the community.

“We will greatly appreciate any support you can give which, in turn, will certainly benefit our netball club and players significantly,” Tobie continued.

“If you are able to sponsor our team or assist with any of the items that we need to rebuild our clubhouse, then you should feel free to contact me on 067 895 0895.”
