José Gonçalves De Canha, a well known businessman from Somerset West, passed away peacefully at his home on 20 February.
He was born in Porto Moniz, Madeira in 1943. He arrived in South Africa in 1960 at the age of 16 and worked very hard to reach his goals.
De Canha was the first Portuguese to open a business in the Strand. A variety of business ventures followed in Somerset West as well as in Kuilsriver. He is widely known for being the owner of Heldervue Shopping Centre.
He wanted to provide a convenient shopping experience for residents in the vicinity. De Canha was known for his charm, friendliness and kindness, always willing to go out of his way to help others and giving wise advice freely.
He is survived by his wife Ana Maria, children Rosalina, João and Joseline, grandchildren Dylan, Gina, Diego, Tiago and Giano.
Heldervue Shopping Centre will be paying tribute to De Canha today (Thursday 3 March). A condolence book will be available for those who wish to write a personal message.
