Both Helderberg Cricket Club (HCC) teams ended the club cricket season on a high as they recorded victories in the final two matches on Monday (21 March).
The first team claimed victory over Mitchells Plain CC (MPCC), while the second team were triumphant over Atlantis CC. The club’s teams were in action in two matches apiece at the weekend as the curtain closed on the 2021-’22 season.
In their first match of the weekend, the HCC first team had to bow the knee to a superior Somerset West CC at Helderzicht Sports Ground on Saturday (19 March). The home side batted first and were all bowled out for 117 runs, with Damian Jooste (28) and Gasant Moller (43) top-scoring in their innings.
In turn, SWCC knocked off the tally in just 19 overs, scoring 120/2 – see the club’s report on page 24. Aidan Salie (1/35) and Marcello Thomas (1/26) picked up the wickets for HCC.
On the same day, the HCC second team locked horns with Belhar CC and recorded a seven-wicket bonus-point victory. The local team fielded first and bowled their opponents out for 95 runs in 35 overs, with Kilermo Rafferty (4/13) and Chad Hendrickson (2/12) the pick of the bowlers.
In their innings, the Helderberg CC batsmen made light work of the target, knocking it down in 23,2 overs. Bradley Jakes (32) and Algrin Beukes (23*) were the top batting performers.
In their second match of the weekend, the HCC first team travelled to Mitchells Plain to take on MPCC in their last match of the season. The visitors fielded first and were in fine form as they bowled out the home side for 108 in 38 overs. Jooste (3/21), Shane Fredericks (4/23) and Dexter Hindley (3/19) were the chief destroyers.
With a low target to chase, the HCC batsmen set out to end the season on a positive note, but they lost plenty of wickets and struggled sometimes. They, however, managed to cross the line in 38th over, scoring 110/7 to record a bonus-point three-wicket victory. Junaid Sylvester (24) and Gary-Jon Sylvester (19) were the top-scorers.
In their match against Atlantis CC on Monday, the HCC second team continued their winning form and recorded a 105-run bonus-point victory on Monday. Batting first, the boys from Somerset West set-up a defendable 200/9 in 50 overs with Jakes (41), Ethan Gouws (35) and Gregan Mouers (51) shining with the willow.
The HCC bowlers were in devastating form and ripped through the Atlantis CC batting line-up to bowl them out for 95 runs in just 29 overs. Gouws (4-30), Hendrickson (2/27) and Rafferty (2/0) were best HCC bowlers.
