In a remarkable display of creativity and problem solving skills, Helderberg Robotics Club members participated and excelled in the South African leg of the 2022 World Robot Olympiad, which took place in Honeydew, Gauteng in September. The local roboteers were finalists competing for the win – which would enable them to fly the South African flag in Dortmund, Germany this month (November) – in the Robot Tennis category with one set and 6-2 up on games. However, the roboteer duo, Muaz Hassim and Imraan Samuels, both learners at Parel Vallei High School, suffered a blow in the last 20 seconds of the challenge when one of their robots fell into the opponent’s half, a misfortune that cost them dearly, and they were named runners-up. Here are the roboteer rookies, who joined the Helderberg Robotics Club only in February this year, displaying their silver medals and prizes from Lego Education.
