In a remarkable display of creativity and problem solving skills, Helderberg Robotics Club members participated and excelled in the South African leg of the 2022 World Robot Olympiad, which took place in Honeydew, Gauteng in September. The local roboteers were finalists competing for the win – which would enable them to fly the South African flag in Dortmund, Germany this month (November) – in the Robot Tennis category with one set and 6-2 up on games. However, the roboteer duo, Muaz Hassim and Imraan Samuels, both learners at Parel Vallei High School, suffered a blow in the last 20 seconds of the challenge when one of their robots fell into the opponent’s half, a misfortune that cost them dearly, and they were named runners-up. Here are the roboteer rookies, who joined the Helderberg Robotics Club only in February this year, displaying their silver medals and prizes from Lego Education.

Cody Williams, Helderberg Robotics Club coach, was honoured with the prestigious Dylan Rheeders award, which is bestowed to a coach who displays remarkable compassion, creativity, innovation, perseverance, enthusiasm, adaptability, collaboration, dedication and, ultimately, serving the World Robot Olympiad cause. The Helderberg Robotics Club rookies who also excelled in the national competition include Jadon Steele and Eben Gelderblom, who clinched gold and ranked sixth in South Africa, Ciaran and Aneiran Manickum who also bagged gold and ranked fourth in the country, and Leighton Roelf and Thomas Hansby who earned silver and are currently ranked 18th.

The all-girls team, Ravenclaws, with Isabella Ebrahim and Amelie Toussaint, also clinched 10th place in their category. They believe their robot, Felicia was nervous and colour-blind on the day of the competitions as they scored a perfect run during practice sessions. Foto:

The senior team members, Michael Shepstone, Cydney Williams and Raaid Fajandar had to design and build a robot that moves around in hospitals taking water to wards that needs it, take out laundry and navigates without hurting any human traffic. Their efforts earned them 10th place.Foto:
