After 36 years on the Helderberg Hospice board, including several as chairperson, Julian Weil has stepped down from this role, though his commitment to the organisation he has served for more than three decades will continue.

Decades of dedication

The year 2026 has been one of significant milestones for Helderberg Hospice, as the organisation celebrates 41 years of providing hospice and palliative care to the Helderberg community. Among these milestones is the remarkable contribution of Weil, who has served on the board since the early 1980s, a journey that began after he had experienced first-hand the frustration of not being able to provide greater support when his own father was seriously ill.

Weil was appointed chairperson of the board in 2019 and continued in the role until August 2026. As he approached his 80th birthday he felt the time was right to step down, but he would remain on the board as an ordinary member and continue to advocate for the importance of hospice and palliative care in the community.

New chairperson

At the annual general meeting Lyndi Labuschagne, a director at Morkel de Villiers, was welcomed as the new chairperson, taking up the position in September this year. She has served as a board director since 2020.

At the annual general meeting Weil expressed his confidence in Labuschagne, the board of directors, the CEO and the management team in building sustainable hospice and palliative care services to meet the needs of people and their loved ones navigating a serious illness.

His long-standing commitment represents an extraordinary contribution to Helderberg Hospice and to the many patients and their families who have benefited from its services over the past four decades.
