WEDNESDAY 6 MAY
Somerset West: The U3A HELDERBERG will host Andrea Angel at the Dutch Reformed church, 82 Firmount Road, to discuss seabird conservation at 10:00. Angel will address how seabirds are the most endangered group of birds globally, particularly migratory albatross and petrel species that face threats from commercial fishing operations. South Africa’s oceans support over 25 seabird species but are also home to more than 300 commercial fishing vessels, creating significant challenges for bird survival. Angel heads the Albatross Task Force, which works to protect thousands of pelagic seabirds through research, mitigation measures, and policy development. Despite ongoing compliance challenges, she reports that new conservation tools are emerging with South Africa leading international efforts. Angel holds a Masters in Conservation Biology from UCT and has worked on seabird conservation since 2003, including projects on remote islands like Marion and Gough. Originally from Chile, she has lived on three continents and been based in Cape Town for 25 years. Members attend free, visitors pay R20. Phone Denise Fourie on 0722111173 for enquiries.
