The local rugby calendar is set for a massive boost as the second edition of the Helderberg Community Cup (CommCup) kicks off this Sunday (4 October), bringing together six regional clubs to celebrate heritage, community and fierce local rivalries.

Following a successful inaugural tournament that drew crowds from across the Helderberg to Riverside Park in Macassar last year, organisers have expanded the event’s operational structures, match-day planning and player eligibility frameworks for this year’s instalment (“Helderberg CommCup set to unite”, DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 17 September 2025).

Riverside Park will once again host this year’s action across two Sundays, before the tournament moves to Sir Lowry’s Pass Sports Ground as host venue next year.

Every known rugby club across the Helderberg region was invited to participate, with six teams confirming their entries: Macassar; Strand; Strand United; Eersterivier; Sir Lowrians and Faure.

Organisers emphasised that selection for the CommCup extends beyond mere league standings. Instead, the tournament centres on community connections, regional history and offering local talent a competitive platform to showcase their abilities.

Staged as a knockout competition, the opening round will take place at Riverside Park in Macassar this Sunday.

The opening day schedule features three high-stakes fixtures, with Sir Lowrians taking on Faure at 13:10, Eersterivier facing Strand United at 14:40 and Macassar locking horns with Strand at 16:00. The tournament will conclude with Finals Day at the same venue on Sunday 11 October.

Teams will compete for a total estimated prize purse of R25 000, with silverware up for grabs across cup, challenger and plate categories.

Designed as a complete community festival, match days will feature food stalls, music and family-oriented entertainment alongside the rugby action. Ticketing and entry details will be released on the official Macassar Rugby Club social media pages ahead of the opening fixtures.

Looking beyond this year, participating clubs have agreed to establish a dedicated CommCup Committee featuring representatives from each club to formalise governance. “Our vision is for the CommCup to become a permanent fixture on the Helderberg sporting calendar,” the organising team stated.

“The legacy should not simply be measured by who wins the CommCup, but by the relationships built, players developed, history preserved and opportunities created.”
