The atmosphere at Charles Morkel Stadium in Strand was electric this past weekend, as Helderberg Rugby Club hosted the highly anticipated Rugby Reloaded tournament on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 March.

Despite a opening night that saw the heavens open and temperatures drop, the action on the field remained red-hot!

The tournament brought together a formidable lineup of regional heavyweights, including Hamiltons, Maties, All Saints, Sir Lowrians and UWC, all competing in a high-octane, fast-paced format that kept the local faithful on the edge of their seats.

In a clinical display of homeground advantage, Helderberg clawed their way to the summit.

The Cup final was a classic encounter against a resilient Hamiltons side. In a match defined by physical carries and tactical awareness, Berge managed to hold their nerve, securing a 29-22 victory to keep the trophy in the basin.

The competition was equally fierce in the Plate final, where Maties faced off against Helderberg’s second team. While the local side put up a valiant fight, the Maroon Machine’s clinical execution proved the difference as the students walked away with a hard-fought 19-15 win.

Beyond the scorelines, the weekend was a celebration of the sport’s core values. Despite the wet and chilly conditions, the tournament was played with impeccable sportsmanship and a sense of camaraderie that transcended the rivalry on the pitch.

Helderberg Rugby Club expressed its gratitude to the players, coaches, referees and the army of volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure a seamless event.

“The success of this weekend is a testament to the passion for rugby in our region,” the club noted in a statement. “From the support staff to the fans who braved the weather, everyone played a part in making Rugby Reloaded a massive success.”
